Comments:My heart goes out to Sir Graves' family. I know mine is heavy with grief at the passing of this most lovable man. Saturday afternoon in Detroit ( even if sunny out) I spent with Sir Graves and afterwards my sister and I would perform The Blob mouth and crack up. He will certainly be missed.

Comments: I am truly sorry for the loss of a great man. I grew up watching him every Saturday, Thanks to Sir Graves for getting me into Horror Flix's. I use to have nightmares from the movies, then 1 day he had a behind the scene, saw how the movie was made, the costumes, & the makeup. That cured my nightmares completely of monsters. He will be missed & cheerished dearly. Sincerely a devoted fan, Kathie

Comments:My interest in theatre grew from my love of scary movies and Sir Graves Ghastly on Saturday mornings. What started as an obsession with monster make up grew into an acting and teaching career. Mr. Deming, I've been a drama teacher for 18 years. I've touched the lives of hundreds of young people like you touched mine. Your legacy continues! Thank you so much for the wonderful memories and helping fulfill my life's dream. More importantly, thanks for helping me help others fulfill their dreams as well. Rest in Peace...

Comments:Growing up in Detroit, I rarely missed Sir Graves on Saturday afternoon. Sunny days had my mother pushing me out of the house, but somehow I always managed to get back in, tune in to his show and let my imagination take control. Sir Graves was a big part of my childhood, and one of the high points of those Detroit years was actually meeting him at Wonderland Mall in Livonia. He was there on a little stage, and the line seemed like it stretched all the way to Westland. Even though EVERYONE was waiting for a signed photo, Sir Graves noticed my little Instamatic camera and brought over one of his crew to take our picture together. I would have been happy just to take a snap or two from the crowd, but this kind man was not too busy to make sure I had an experience I'd never forget. Farewell Sir Graves. You made my childhood a little brighter.

Comments:My brother and I were big Sir Graves fans and through most of 70’s we looked forward to spooky Friday or Saturday nights watching Sir Graves with whatever god-awful snacks we could devise. One movie in particular I remember is one called “Horror Hotel.” It starred Christopher Lee and was a Hammer Studios release. I remember it because it haunted me (literally) for months after seeing it. I would lie awake at night trying to think of other things to keep the scary images out of my head. (How’s that for a horror movie making its mark?) Sir Graves was a very big part of my youth and Mr. Deming's work will not be forgotten.

Comments:I remember the first time I was able to see one of my drawings on the show. I went crazy!! I remember watching the spooky shows as a young child with my family on the weekend mornings after all of the cartoons were over we all loved it. In kindergarden Sir Graves came to my school for a Halloween spook house and party. I thought it was the greatest time of my young life. Although it was 30 years ago it still brings a smile to my face. He was a great entertainer and will dearly me missed by me and my family!! Good-bye Sir. Gone but never forgotten

Comments:My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to Mr. Deming's family. My brother and I were speaking about how much we enjoyed watching Sir Graves on Saturday afternoon's growing up during the 1970's. He made me a fan of old Horror Films!! Saturday's were special--Cartoons in the morning (Romper Room, Bozo, Ooopsy The Clown), Sir Graves and Wrestling (The Sheik, Bobo Brazil, Dick The Bruiser) in the afternoon, and later The Ghoul and Saturday Night Live in the evening. Local TV was fun!! Kids today don't know!! Thanks for being a part of it, Sir Graves!! Rest In Peace and Happy Haunting!!

Comments:I have so many fond memories of watching Sir Graves Ghastly. I was very fortunate to live in the country south of Toledo, Ohio, where we had a rotating antenna on an old windmill. This allowed me to pull in Detroit and Cleveland stations during the late sixties. I was so lucky because I was able to watch Sir Graves every week. I also got to watch Morgus out of Dertoit, Ghoulardi, The Ghoul and Big Chuck and Houlihan all out of the Cleveland area. I'm actually old enough to go way back into the 1950s when I was just a little horror fan living in Muncie, Indiana. I got to watch Selwin out of Indianapolis every Friday night. Sir Graves was definitly one of my favorite horror hosts. It is because of him and the others that I have chosen to carry on the tradition of movie hosting -- although now we do it on Web TV instead of regular TV. Thanks for such a fabulous website. I only wish the newer generations could have had the joy of watching Sir Graves Ghastly when he was on TV. Rest in peace

Comments: I remember being glued to the TV on Saturday afternoons to see just what Sir Graves had for us this week. My brother and I would recreate the Blob in our livingroom using mom's make up, cardboard cut out, and laying over the couch with our heads hanging over the edge upside down with music playing on the stereo. The loss of Sir Graves feels like losing a friend. My best to his family now that he has passed. My regret is that I found out about this site after his passing. Thank you Keith for the great tribute to a piece of our childhood growing up lower Michigan.

Comments:I was born in Detroit. Lived most of my life in Detroit and still live in the Detroit area. I'll soon be 50 years old, but I remember watching Sir Graves with my sisters, like it was yesterday. As Ghastly as he was supposed to be I was never really scared of him. He was actually kinda loveable in a weird way. My favorite part of the show was, aside from the movie, was "The Glob". He would sing some cool songs. My sisters didn't believe that it was Sir Graves' mouth upside down, I'm not sure they ever did until now. There are very few things left that are part of the memories of anyone in the Detroit area back then. Memories are all we have left of people, places and things that were a part of that time. Sir Graves was one of the most talked about memories of that time for me and my friends. My heart felt prayers go out to his family for comfort and peace at this very sorrowful time. Thanks for the memories Sir Graves!!

Comments:He was the Best! Every Saturday afternoon I would huddle around the TV to watch those old monter flicks. My favorite segment was always the time he took to look at his veiwers artwork. You could tell he was genuinely impressed with everyones submissions. That inspired me to draw draw draw. Luckily I've been able to make a career for myself as an illustrator. Unfortunately everything I draw looks somewhat scary. HAHA Thanks. Sir Graves.

Comments: My condolences to Lawson Deming's family. Sir Graves was to Metro Detroit horror movie television what the Emperor/Darth Sidious was to Star Wars. Sir Graves was THE head honcho. All the many, many other things on the other television stations were all preludes to Sir Graves show. When he was cancelled he left a huge void that noone could fill. Which isn't surprising. He was a tough/impossible act to follow. None of the other things that were still on could make up for his departure. He took much of the magic of the metro Detroit tv experience with him. I never, never stopped missing him. It's been great seeing Sir Graves again, hearing his voice and reading all about him on Keith's site. It's deeply sad to realize that Mr. Deming is now truly gone. Rest in Peace Sir Graves. Farewell and God bless you.

Comments: I was lucky that my dad worked at WJBK for 42 years and I got to meet Sir Graves in person and actually watch a taping of his show. I got pictures taken with him and one with me wearing his cape. My dad told me a story today that back in the 60's they used to tape his show on Friday nights then the crew and Sir Graves would go to the bar accross the street for last call. Well one night they were running late and Sir Graves didn't bother taking his makeup off and just went straight to the bar, I guess everyone was shocked and had a good laugh. You will be missed and my deepest sympathy to the Deming family.

When I was younger, about 10 (and I am 36 now), I would do exactly as he says: close the windows, draw the shades, cuddle next to the telly and watch the horror flick for the day. I miss seeing him on the television and someday, catch some of his reruns on tvland or something. I love him dearly!!!!!!!!!

Comments: Greetings. I'm a horror host out of the Chicagoland area. I vas very sad to hear of the recent passing of Sir Graves. Since I didn't grow up in Sir Graves Ghastly's viewing area I vasn't afforded the opportunity to see his show. However, I do know of him because of the Internet and the fact that I'm a fan of fellow horror hosts and their shows. In a show of respect, I vould like to extend my sincerest condolences to the family of Sir Graves and vould like to thank him for paving the vay for those of us following in his ghoulish footsteps.

Comments:The last few weeks have become one of those memorial times in Life when I've experienced intense joy and intense pain and heartache--the kind of "moments" that you think about on your deathbed. We are from Virginia and I was on my first vacation in 2 years with my adult daughter when I heard about the Virginia Tech horror. We were having a joyous visit with my Daddy for the first time in two years. My daughter had a friend at VT that she immediately IM'd and he was okay (but the tragedy still lingered). The next morning, we drove for 3 hours to a lively, raucous, loving reunion with our closest friends that we had not seen for 10 years. After that, my daughter became sullen and uncommunicative. Although I tried to speak with her, we drove 6 hours to Savannah, Georgia with her being nasty, hostile, and vicious whenever I tried to speak with her. We spent 4 unpleasant days in Savannah--I finally left her sleeping in the hotel room so that I could enjoy my vacation. I kept trying to co

Comments:I'm just another of Mr. Deming's legion of fans who was also dreading the news of his passing. In the early 1980's, I contacted WJBK about securing the rights for a Sir Graves Ghastly comic strip. They told me to contact Mr. Deming directly, as they had no further interest in the show or the character (supposedly, all the videos had been erased). I wrote to Mr. Deming and he responded with a telephone call, "Is this Mark McGovern? This is Sir Graves Ghastly, MYAHAHAHAHAHA!" Boy, was I floored! We agreed to meet at a mall in the Detroit area where he was making an appearance as Sir Graves. Because the light was out in the "dressing room" - a lavatory - I had to hold a flashlight while Mr. Deming transformed himself into Sir Graves. It was all done with a black eyebrow pencil, a stick of white greasepaint, the wig, and the beard in a matter of minutes. Mr. Deming was a warm, vital, and really funny guy (I wanted to get some photos of him out of character to use as models for the strip, b

He certainly scared me to death as a young girl watching him on the late night shows. I would huddle up in bed and watch him and then wonder if I would be able to sleep. I wish I would have contacted him a long time ago to show my appreciation of him. He will never be replaced and was one of my favorites as a young girl. Rest in peace Sir Graves.

I'm 37, so most of my Sir Graves memories are from the very late 70's and early 80's. I met him and got an autographed picture, at the Wyandotte haunted house in 80 or 81. Comments:My first exposure to the classic horror movies was through this man's show and he was what I consider the golden age of T.V. programming. For me as a kid back then in the 70s he was part of what made Saturdays so awsome. First in the morning I'd watch the Saturday cartoons followed by Sir Graves Ghastly on Channel 2 followed by other great shows for the rest of the day and into the night. It was people like Mr. Deming that made television the great medium it was, long before anything comming close to cable ever arrived. I missed him when he left the airwaves and I'll miss him even more now that the final curtain has fallen. Fare thee well good Sir, the world shines a little less bright with your departure.

Comments:The coffin for real. My childhood ended this week. I'd heard about Bobby "Boris" Pickett of Monster Mash fame dying, and went on a geek horror movie posting board to hunt for an obit. When I read "Sir Graves Ghastly" I gasped. Right in the most morbidly self-conscious period of adolescence, namely junior high, I really thought my parents were drips and that Sir Graves was God. (turned out I was right) I started watching in 1967, and met him at the then-new WJBK studios in Southfield on July 4, 1972. I was there with other fans, but when Sir Graves gave us a tour of the station, he directed most of his comments at me. It cemented my desire to go into broadcasting (I was 14 at the time). In September 1994 my wife and I visited Lawson and Mary at their home in Medina, Ohio, and we went out to dinner and had a great reunion. They even invited us to stay for a couple days, but we couldn't because our airline was all booked. I lost contact with Mr and Mrs Graves when they

Comments:I loved Sir Graves Ghastly's show, and for years it was the highlight of my childhood Saturdays -- far more so than morning cartoons. I didn't watch the featured movies closely; usually, they were just background to whatever I was playing with, except for the scary parts which I would drop everything to watch. But the interstitial SGG bits always commanded my attention. My favorite was when he would paint his chin like a face and sing a goofy song while filming his mouth with the camera upside down. I knew how it was done, of course, but good God it was mesmerizing. Perhaps the most basic instruction I took from his shows was completely unconscious: "Look out! Scary monsters! Weird science! Magic! Aliens! People dying in horrible ways! Everybody panic!" ...and then, just as the cringe began, there would be a wink and a nudge and a grin from a familiar face. "But it's also all just a game, kids, and if you keep that in mind, you can make it a fun game." I'm

Comments:Sir Graves Ghastly left such an indelible mark on my childhood. I knew I could count on him on Saturdays for great entertainment. It still gives me goose bumps when I think about how we closed the curtains, curled up in front of the television, and looked forward to a great movie with our "friend". Sir Graves will be truly missed.

Comments:I was very sorry to hear of Sir Graves Shastly's passing. When I was a young girl, my brothers and and my sister and I would all wait until my grandparents were asleep and then we would all sleep on the pull out couch and watch Sir Graves Ghasty, and try to stay awake until it came on too! We had great times. He sure was a funny guy and gave us all some fun memories from our childhood.

Comments:On Tuesday the 23rd, I was in a doctor's office when I heard "Green Onions" through the intercom. My friend's father played on it. When I got home, I told my wife, an immigrant, that I heard the song and how Sir Graves used to play it while skeletons danced. I told her all about the show and how my brother, now on Motor City Middays on 97.1 FM Detroit, used to watch it every Sat. I heard today (April 27) that he had died the same day I was talking about him for the first time in years. He will be missed by all. Thank you for this web site.

Comments:I was shocked and saddened to hear of Sir Graves' (aka Lawson J. Deming) passing. Like many others, I assumed he had passed away years ago. As a kid, my folks, sister and brothers would watch Sir Graves and his gang of ghoulish characters every Saturday afternoon. As for me, I was TERRIFIED of him. I'd go outside or to my room when he came on, and I wouldn't watch TV again until the show was over. As I grew up into my pre-teens and beyond, I finally got the joke and began watching and enjoying the show with my family. Thanks Mr. Deming for both scaring the hell out of me and later laughing at and with you. Rest In Peace Good Sir. Rich G.

As a son of a third generation undertaker living upstairs of the parlor watching Sir Graves was a thrill I will never forget. I was even a fan club member who once received a color postcard signed by Sir Graves for my birthday. Born in 1961 Sir Graves was in my hey day and will never be forgotten. Thanks to him and his movies it was very scary growing up watching him in the funeral parlor as well as many dreams. I had slept many nights with one eye open as well as the lights. May Sir Graves R.I.P. Regards, John J. Liedel

Comments:Sir Graves Ghastly certainly was an inspiration to the generation that grew up on his great show all through the 70's. I am certain he had an affect on more people than he ever knew possible. Its ashame it was not possible to honor the man in a fitting way while he was around to see it and appreciate it. Mr. Deming lived a very long full life, but I am still sad that I will never get the chance to meet the man and tell him exactly what Sir Graves meant to me. While Mr. Demings has passed on Sir Graves Ghastly is immortal, and will always be with us. Yours in the here after, Ormon Grimsby

I really came across Lawson passing by accident, I was looking at wxyz home page advertisment on TV, and I was his picture saying, "So Long Sir Graves" I said what! I went imediately to the site and I couldn't believe Sir Graves was gone. I know he was up in age but just have a problem accepting it, he was a part of my boy hood meemories I still remember when Sir Graves first appeared on TV advertising his show "Sir Graves Presents" on the show "Woodrow The Woodsman" to review Saturday afternoon. He created a genre of comfortability amondst the viewers his era which made wathching horror movies not only fun, but a Saturday afternoon must.
