Russian Raps U.S., But Audience Doesn't See Red

"When our rockets rain you, you will be exposed. So spoke Russian information specialist Dr. Miechyslav V Dombroyan to the Ohio Jaycees Saturday at Holiday Inn. He attacked America, its government, and its armed forces without raising as much as a single audible protest from his audience of more than 100 persons. Dombroyan accused the Government of lies; he said America was the war-monger; and that it would be this government, not his own, which would start the next war. He said it and got away with it. He threw every Russian propaganda tactic in the book at his audience and aside from a few murmurs in the back of the room, no one challenged him.

The tension grew as he continued to score the United States in phrase after phrase. Some faces grew white, apparently with anger, but he continued his talk. It wasn't until the Russian ripped the beard from his face exposing himself as a Cleveland radio man that the audience smiled, then laughed and then applauded. Lawson Deming of KYW, Cleveland, proved a point . . . again. "A Russian, more often than not, can say what he wants and get away with it without Americans even challenging the statements." Deming made the comment before going in to face his audience of more than 100 persons at the president's banquet. Very few in the crowd which swamped the room were aware that a gigantic hoax was taking place. In fact, newsmen weren't let in on the secret (by accident, Jaycee officials said) until about an hour ahead of the scheduled talk. According to Deming, there have been a few isolated instances where members of the audience have tried to get at him. In one case, he said, the audience spent most of its time trying to contain each other. Generally speaking, he noted, people listen passively.

As Dombroyan, Deming said the Russians have proved space visitors exist. He said it has been shown "beings from other planets have visited earth since the dawn of man." He continued his talk, explaining the Russians were learning they could about rockets from space beings with whom they have made contact. No one questioned him. He said America was foolish because "it pooh-poohs the flying saucers." Dombroyan went on to say: "Your government has lied to you. Your newspapers have lied to you. You are a fat and lazy people. You content yourself to watch television while your children steal from gasoline stations or maybe rape a teen-age girl." Try as he could, Deming could get no reaction from his stunned audience. The audience listened until he finally said: "When our rockets rain down on you, you will be exposed like this" And he ripped off his beard. It took the crowd more than a minute to recover. The sigh of relief was heard around town, or so it seemed.
