AMHERST -- George Taylor, a Ford Motor Co. employee, was named winner
of the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award last night. Taylor, an Amherst
native, was cited for his civic contributions during the last year and
in years past. He is married and has three children. He serves as second
vice president of the Amherst Community Chest, director of a Girl Scout
movement, a founder of the Amherst Athletic Association and a nine-year
member of the group, and is a member of St. Peter's Church of Christ.
Amherst Schools
Taylor was graduated from Amherst school in 1944, and joined the marines
that same year. He served nearly three years. In 1955 he was Amherst
tennis champion. Taylor has also served as an official at high school
and junior high school basketball games. He is not a member of the Jaycees.
Fred Berger, president of Amherst Branch of the Lorain County Savings
and Trust Co., presented the award. Speaker at the banquet was Lawson
Deming, executive producer of KYW radio in Cleveland. Deming discussed
the evidence for and against belief in Unidentified Flying Objects (flying
saucers) since 1943. He cited American Air Force investigations into
the UFO situation for his material, and finally said an Air Force investigation
revealed that 26 per cent of the "flying saucer" reports could
not be explained in any other way, but that they were "real".
Harry Robinson Jr. was emcee at the banquet. Vice president of the jaycees,
Richard Berry, presented the president's message, due to the illness
of President Thomas Abraham.
Future Plans
Berry, delivering Abraham's speech, said Jaycee plans for the future
include a sale of American flags in Amherst, and lauded the results
of the jaycee-sponsored "March of Dimes," which has already
met its goal although not all collection boxes have been picked up.
The Rev. Gail Bergstresser gave the invocation and benediction. Others
present at the dinner and award ceremony were George Durnell, national
Jaycees director, and Fred Stitzell, district three vice president.
